RESEARCH AT KURSK STATE UNIVERSITY

Realizing the concept of the comprehensive university, Kursk State University comprises both the academic and the research activities in wide areas of science, social studies, and humanities. The focus areas reputed among the international scientific community include molecular acoustics and thermodynamics, physical chemistry, applied mathematics, linguistic folklore studies and some aspects of international historic studies. In addition to basic research, there are a number of laboratories conducting applied research and development studies.

Research Center for Condensed Matter

Physics

The Center consists of two divisions:

  • The Laboratory of Molecular Acoustics (highly precise measurements of the speed of sound, the density, the heat capacity, etc. of organic liquids and their mixtures, e.g. hydrocarbons and their halogenated derivatives, in a wide range of thermodynamic conditions; the data are included into the basic reference systems such as Thermo Data Engine by NIST and Landolt-Börnstein by SpringerMaterials);
  • Department of Theoretical Physics (multidisciplinary research focused on the methods for modeling of spreading and relaxation phenomena, signal processing (especially, by the wavelets) including biophysical applications, and prediction of the thermodynamic properties of liquids at high pressures).

Research Laboratory of Organic Synthesis

The research area constitutes the fundamental kinetic aspects of the synthesis of biologically active complex substances as well as the applied problems of the synthesis of pharmaceuticals with antimicrobial, antiviral and immunomodulatory activity, acidochromic dyes sensitive to a rather narrow range of pH adjusted to wound healing applications, biodegradable plastics.

Interdisciplinary Nanotechnology Center

The recently developing research unit assisted by modern equipment including a scanning electron microscope supplied with the energy dispersive Xray microanalysis and an atomic-force microscope. Presently carried out investigations are related to the dielectric relaxation process in the composite materials formed by ferroelectric surface modified nanoparticles in polymer matrices.

Research Laboratory of Environmental

Monitoring

In addition to the survey of the local ecological infrastructure (geobotanical, hydrochemical, and technospheric aspects), the Laboratory is involved into industrial cooperation. The developed peatbased organo-mineral fertilizers and organic soil improvers are quite successful at the Russian market.

Institute of Parasitology

The Institute is involved into a development of the official state Sanitary Rules and Norms adopted by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

There are University’s research divisions carrying out research focused on the regional issues of history and philology, such as the Institute of Archeology of Southeast Russia, the laboratories Linguistic Folklore Studies and Regional Lexicography and Ethnolinguistics. The results are not only well acknowledged in Russia (e.g. included into the Russian Federation Museum Fund, the Lexical Atlas of the Russian National Dialects by the Russian Academy of Sciences, etc.) but the leaders of the research groups are known among the international community of slavists.
